Releasing potential

Our aim is to transform the prospects of children aged two to six in poor communities across Sub-Saharan Africa by helping nursery school teachers  release the full potential of the children at their schools.

Background

Perivoli Schools Trust began in Namibia in 2012 by sponsoring a nursery school at the Okonjima Conservancy http://www.perivoliokonjimacountryschool.org/. It then sought to branch out into neighbouring rural communities by refurbishing existing nursery schools and providing toys. However, we were unable to find teachers in the rural communities who understood the importance of play and the toys disappeared, so we realised that a new approach was required.

Approach

We show teachers how play can enhance a child’s development and how to make toys out of everyday materials. To achieve this, we employ Perivoli Trainers who are local to the area. They train groups of nursery school teachers and visit them individually at their schools to provide additional support.

Progress

We began in Namibia where we have reached two thirds of the country’s nursery school teachers and have started in Malawi. Our goal is to replicate the programme across Sub-Saharan Africa.
